Domitius Domitianus, Usurper in Egypt (AD 296-297/8). BI follis or nummus (26mm, 10.04 gm, 11h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 2/5, light smoothing. Alexandria, 3rd officina, AD 298. IMP C L DOMITIVS DOMITIANVS AVG, laureate head of Domitianus right / GENIO POPV-L-I ROMANI, Genius standing facing, nude but for chlamys over left shoulder, head left, patera from which liquor flows in right hand, cornucopia in left; eagle standing left, head right, wings spread at feet to left, Γ in right field, ALE in exergue. RIC VI 20 var. (wreath in eagles beak). Prominent and bold details with a rich walnut patina.

The personal history of Domitius Domitianus and the circumstances of his attempted usurpation in Egypt remain obscure. All that is known for certain is that early in Diocletian's Tetrarchy, Egypt attempted to break away from the Empire, perhaps spurred by Roman military setbacks against Persia in AD 296. Historical records name the leader of the revolt as a certain Aurelius Achilleus, but it is uncertain whether this rebel is one in the same as Domitianus, or a supporter of his, or perhaps even a general that instigated the revolt and selected Domitianus as a figurehead ruler. In addition to billon folles such as this one on the regular imperial denominational system, Domitianus also struck coins on the old Egyptian standard, all of them dated "Year Two," suggesting the revolt lasted longer than a year. In any case, Diocletian undertook to crush the rebellion in mid-AD 297 and stormed Alexandria after a bitter siege.

PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy IV Philopater (222-205/4 BC). AR stater or tetradrachm (26mm, 13.78 gm, 12h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 2/5, Fine Style. Uncertain mint, perhaps Syria or Phoenicia, ca. 217-215/0 BC. Jugate draped busts right of Serapis, laureate with miniature atef crown above forehead, and Isis, crowned with grain and miniature horned disc above forehead; dotted border / ΠTOΛEMAIOY-BAΣIΛEΩΣ, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, head right, wings closed, double cornucopia bound with royal diadem over right wing; ME in left field, HP monogram in right field. CPE 910. Svoronos 1136a. Two exceptionally attractive high-relief portraits with medium cabinet toning. Despite the surface grade of 2, this coin has overall satiny surfaces with a few spots of brightness and the look of the coin is akin to aged stone. It's quite appealing in hand.

Ex Heritage Auctions, Auction 3101 (27 August 2022), lot 35158.

According to Lorber in CPE, p. 439, "these two monograms do not occur together on other coins. HP appears on an issue of Ioppe (no. 913) and ME appears at Ptolemais under Ptolemy III, perhaps suggesting an origin in Syria or Phoenicia."

Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR cistophorus (26mm, 11.97 gm, 11h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 2/5. Pergamum, 19-18 BC. IMP•IX•TR-PO V, bare head of Augustus right / S•P•R• / SIGNIS / RECEPTIS, legend in three lines in opening of triumphal arch decorated with aquila on each wall and inscribed IMP•IX•TR•POT•V and surmounted by halted quadriga right with charioteer holding four sets of reins. RIC I 510. RPC I 2218.

At the eastern end of the Roman Forum once stood the Arch of Augustus. Erected in 20/19 BC, it spanned the Via Sacra between the Temples of Castor and Pollux, and the Temple of Divus Iulius. This arch was built to honor Augustus' recovery of the legionary eagles (aquilae) lost in Parthia by Crassus and Antony. It is believed to have replaced an earlier structure, likely a single arch celebrating the victory at Actium. Despite its current state of partial preservation, this numismatic evidence remains crucial in piecing together its original appearance.
