Lot description: Ancients SICILY. Leontini. Ca. 475-460 BC. AR tetradrachm (23mm, 17.20 gm, 5h). NGC AU 4/5 - 3/5, overstruck. Charioteer driving walking quadriga right; Nike flying right above, crowning horses with wreath / ΛΕΟ-ΝΤ-ΙΝΟΝ, head of lion right with open jaws and protruding tongue; four barley corns around. SNG ANS 203. HGC 2, 660. Lovely argent surfaces awash with shadows of deeper charcoal toning. Devices are exceptionally sharp despite a noted overstrike. The silver tetradrachms of Leontini show a notable progress of artistic styles throughout the fifth century, beginning with archaic depictions of a walking quadriga similar to issues of Sicily, to a highly stylized Apollo head of a "mannerist" style, to the final evolution of circa 435-430 BC, depicting Apollo in a highly refined and naturalistic form. Leontini's reliance on agriculture instead of sea trade is reflected with the barley corns surrounding the central lion on the reverse. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/greek/ancients-sicily-leontini-ca-475-460-bc-ar-tetradrachm-23mm-1720-gm-5h-ngc-au-4-5-3-5-overstruck/a/3114-33014.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-3114-01162024 HID02906262019 © 2023 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
