Lot description: Marcus Aurelius. As Caesar, AD 139-161. Æ Medallion (425mm, 65.70 g, 12h). Rome mint. Stuck under Antoninus Pius, AD 154-155. AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII FIL, bareheaded and draped bust right / TR POT VIIII COS II, Salus, draped at waist, seated right, holding and feeding serpent draped over arms with extended right hand, to right, Hercules, nude but for cloak draped over shoulders, standing left, leaning on club set on ground to left held in right hand; at center, tree. Among the little-known attributes of Hercules were his healing powers, which are associated with springs and thermal baths. Here, on this extremely rare medallion, he is paired with Salus, goddess of health, who is shown feeding a serpent (a reference to Aesculapius, god of healing).
