Kleopatra Selene, along with her brothers Alexander Helios and Ptolemy Philadelphos, were brought to Rome following Octavian's victory at Actium. Kleopatra's hand was given to Juba II, Augustus' loyal client king of Mauretania, sometime between 26 and 20 BC. She reigned in Mauretania alongside Juba II and is frequently depicted with him, and rarely by herself, on the kingdom's silver coinage. The date of her death is a matter of debate, possibly occurring sometime around AD 4 or as late as AD 17. Her brothers presumably died in childhood, either naturally or by assassination.

Ex Gestion Numismatique, private sale (20 July 1999).

Born into political turbulence, both figures navigated the treacherous waters of royal life with deftness and grace. Cleopatra Selene, the offspring of the famed Cleopatra VII and Roman Triumvir Marc Antony, was known for her beauty and intelligence. Equally remarkable was her husband, Juba II, an accomplished scholar-king who ascended to power amid the jostling arenas of Rome and Numidia, now modern-day Algeria. Their union formed under Roman auspices after the political upheaval on the aftermath of the Battle of Actium. Augustus, seeking stability, orchestrated their marriage and appointed them as the rulers of Mauretania. Juba II, balancing sophisticated Hellenistic traditions with long-established local cultures, became a steadfast bridge between these diverse worlds. Cleopatra Selene, maintaining her mother's Ptolemaic lineage, brought Egyptian charm to Mauretanian court. Together, they transformed Mauretania into a significant cultural and political player in the Roman world.

MAURETANIAN KINGDOM. Juba II (25 BC-AD 23/24), with Cleopatra Selene. AR denarius (19mm, 2.97 gm, 5h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5, brushed. Caesarea in Mauretania, ca. AD 16-17. REX IVBA, diademed head of Juba II right / BACIΛICCA / KΛЄOΠATPA, crocodile advancing left; dotted border. SNG Copenhagen 8, 568-569. Mazard 344. Nicely struck with underlying polychromatic and moody toning.

The crocodile on the reverse is an allusion to Queen Cleopatra of Mauretania's maternal heritage. She was the daughter of Antony and Cleopatra, the last queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty that had ruled Egypt, a land fertile with crocodiles, for three centuries. In the same period, Augustus also struck denarii with a crocodile on the reverse, which celebrated the Roman conquest of Egypt.
