Lot description:

Kings of Parthia, Phriapatios to Mithradates I AR Drachm. Hekatompylos mint, circa 185-132 BC. Head of king to left, wearing bashlyk / ΑΡ-ΣΑΚΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, archer seated to right on omphalos, holding bow. Sellwood 9.1 (Mithradates I); Shore 7-8 corr. (Mithradates I); Sunrise 252. 4.18g, 20mm, 1h.

Extremely Fine; attractive old cabinet toning.

This particular type marks the first in the series of Parthian AR Drachms to feature the regal epithet BAΣIΛEΩΣ (King) in its inscriptions. Prior issues displayed only the title APΣAKOY, predominantly attributed to Arsaces II and Phriapatios. Phriapatios is believed to have been the grandnephew of Arsaces I, the founder of the Parthian dynasty, and father of three (or four) Parthian rulers including Phraates I, Mithradates I, and Artabanus I.
