Roma Numismatics Ltd > E-Sale 115Auction date: 21 December 2023
Lot number: 12

Price realized: Unsold
Lot description:

Northwest Gaul, the Carnutes or Bituriges Cubi Æ 17mm. Vandiilos, circa 50-30 BC. Celticised draped bust to left / VADИIILO[S] (sic), eagle standing facing, wings spread and head to left; pellet in annulet and [pentagram] flanking head, pellet in annulet and pentagram in left field, pellet in annulet in right field. DT 2587; LT 7988; Depeyrot, NC IV, 122; CCCBM III S152-9; Künker eLive Auction 40, 7006 (same dies). 3.70g, 17mm, 3h.

Near Very Fine.

Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-Sale 103, 24 November 2022, lot 3.

Interestingly, this example of the type displays a die-engravers error in the spelling of the name Vandiilos, with the N and D swapped as well as the N being reversed to И, as can be seen very clearly on the Künker example from 2016 (eLive Auction 40, lot 7006). However, the use of the letter И is seen from other dies of the type, cf. Elsen Auction 142, lot 284.

Estimate: 40 GBP
