Divus Trajan, died 117. Antoninianus (Silver, 23 mm, 4.48 g, 1 h), struck under Trajan Decius, Rome, 250-251. DIVO TRAIANO Radiate head of Trajan to right. Rev. CONSECRATIO Eagle standing facing, head left. Cohen 666. RIC 85a (Decius). NGC Cert #6634576-005, Ch XF Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Pleasing rendering of Trajan as divus, and exceptional fine specimen for issue. Small spots of corrosion on reverse and , otherwise, extremely fine.
In 250-251 Trajan Decius had a series of commemorative coins for deified Roman emperors issued. In total eleven of his predecessors were honored, but several deified leaders were not. Unfortunately, there is no way to find out why Julius Caesar, Claudius, Pertinax and Caracalla were left out.
