Lot description:

SICILY. Aitna. Circa 400-350 BC. Trias (Bronze, 22 mm, 8.02 g, 10 h). Head of Persephone to right, wearing grain wreath. Rev. Horse galloping right. CNG EA 130 (same dies). CNS 6. SNG ANS 1159. Red brown patina. Some roughness and traces of overstriking on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.
From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, acquired from Frank Kovacs, 11 November 1989.

Traces of overstriking were noted in the description of the CNG piece but the host coin could not be identified. On our coin, however, it is possible to distinguish a small dolphin at 4 o'clock on the obverse. This remnant of the undertype strongly suggests that the host coin is a Syracusan litra struck under Dionysios I, which sometimes featured dolphins around the obverse head of Athena (CNS 44; Nomos 27, lot 1049) and was struck to the same standard and employed cast flans similar to that of the present piece.

Starting price: 100 CHF
