| Lot description: Aphilas, circa 310-325. 1/8 Chrysos (Gold, 8 mm, 0.34 g, 1 h). Draped bust of Aphilas to right, wearing tight-fitting head cloth and circular earring; to right, pellet in crescent. Rev. ΑΦΙ/Λ•AC / ΒA•CI/ΛЄΥ in four lines. Hahn, Aksumite, 6. Hahn & Keck, MAKS, 7.103 (this coin). Munro-Hay, AC, type 8. Minor die breaks, otherwise, extremely fine. From the Dr. Stephan Coffman Collection, ex Gorny & Mosch 249, 11 October 2017, 401. Under Aphilas, the Axumites experimented with a fractional gold coinage consisting of 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 chrysoi, likely to facilitate exchange.
