Lot description:

Georgios, patrikios, and Theophylaktos, general kommerkiarioi of the warehouses of Pamphylia and Pisidia, indiction 5 and 6 = 691-693. Seal (Lead, 33 mm, 28.38 g). ΓЄⲰPΓI૪ ΠATPIK[...]ΛAK'; in left field, two indiction symbols; in right field, Є and S Justinian II, crowned, bearded and wearing loros, standing facing, holding globus cruciger in his right hand and cross-tipped scepter in his left. Rev. ΓЄNIK/ⲰN KOMM/ЄPKIAPIⲰN / AΠOΘHKH[C] / ΠAMΦVΛIA/C S ΠICCIΔ, in six lines. Unpublished in the standard references. An extremely rare seal with a magnificent depiction of the emperor. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The kommerkiarioi Georgios and Theophylaktos had authority over many warehouses simultaneously, as their seal record show: Zacos/Veglery cite four seal types mentioning different toponyms for indiction 5 and 6: Asia and Karia, Galatia, Isauria and Lykaonia, and lastly Lazike, Trapezous and Kerasous (p. 150, table 6/2). This exceptional seal adds Pamphylia and Pisidia to the list.

Starting price: 100 CHF
