Lot description:

Constantius II, as Caesar, 324-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.89 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 327. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II to left. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE AYGG / S - F / ARLS Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 312 (for possible prototype). Somewhat rough, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This is a mule, combining an obverse of Constantius II with a reverseof Constantine I. The style is clearly unofficial, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. Moreover, the portrait is of typical Treveran style, not that of Arelate.
