| Lot description: Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.79 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate (?), irregular mint, after 324. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to left. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / PTR Campgate with open doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC (Arelate) 294 (for possible prototype). Light deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine. From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969. This is a mule combining an obverse of Constantine II with a reverse of Constantine I. The style is clearly unofficial, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. No 'VIRTVS AVGG' coins were minted outside Arelate and Rome. The camp gate on this coin clearly imitates Arelate in spite of the Treveran mint mark. Starting price: 25 CHF |  |
