Lot description:

Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.76 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 320. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. D N LICINI AVGVSTI / S(star-in-crescent)A around wreath containing VOT / XX in two lines. Cf. RIC 239 and 240 (for prototype). About extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This rare 'barbarous' imitation is a mule, combining an obverse for Constantine I with a reverse for Licinius I. The style is clearly unofficial, and it may copy official coins from the mint of Arelate.

Starting price: 25 CHF
