Trajan, 98-117. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 32 mm, 25.90 g, 7 h), Rome, 116-117. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P Laureate and draped bust of Trajan to right. Rev. ARMENIA ET MESOPOTAMIA IN POTESTATEM P R REDACTAE / S - C Trajan, laureate and in military attire, standing right, holding reversed spear in his right hand and parazonium in his left; before, Armenia seated left, head turned to right; to left and right, Tigris and Euphrates reclining right and left, each holding reed and leaning on inverted urn from which water flows. BMC 1035. Cohen 39. RIC 642. Woytek 590v. Minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, very fine.

This sestertius celebrates Trajan's victories in the years 114-116, during the course of which the emperor moved into Armenia, where Parthamsiris, a Parthian-backed pretender to the Armenian throne, was killed under suspicious circumstances. Following the conquest of Armenia, the Romans then moved into Mesopotamia and captured the Parthian capital of Ktesiphon before advancing to the Persian Gulf - the easternmost point any Roman general had ever reached at that point. However, increased Parthian resistance and a large-scale revolt by Jewish communities in Kyrenaika, Egypt, Cyprus and Mesopotamia drained Roman power and Trajan retreated to Cilicia in 117, where he died, exhausted, shortly thereafter.

BMC 1017. Cohen 176. RIC 656. Woytek 548v. A bold and attractive example of this interesting issue with excellent reverse details. Light deposits and corrosion on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

Ex Triton XIX, 5 January 2016, 531 and Numismatica Ars Classica 54, 24 March 2010, 410.

Trajan was the first and only Roman emperor to be granted the title 'Optimus Princeps' by the Senate, and for good reason. A moderate ruler and highly skilled general, he maintained a good relationship with the Senate and led the empire to its greatest expansion, annexing Dacia in the north and reaching the Persian Gulf in the east. The reverse of this beautiful sestertius shows Trajan seated on a platform, addressing his troops, from whom he gets proclaimed imperator. Such acclamations were usually made after military successes and carefully counted. In the case of the present coin, it records Trajan's eigth acclamation, which he probably received after the fall of Singara in 115 during his Parthian campaign.
