From a Dutch collection, ex Soler y Llach 1122, 26 October 2021, 475 and previously privately acquired from J. Fernández in June 2000.

This denarius was struck during the Perusine War of 41-40 BC, in which Octavian besieged Mark Antony's wife Fulvia and his brother Lucius in Perusia. After the fall of the city, Octavian pardoned Fulvia and Lucius, but he had the city council and more than 300 senators and equites executed on 15 March 40 on the altar of Divus Julius Caesar. According to a famous passage in Sueton's De vita Caesarum, the wrathful triumvir drily answered every attempt to beg for pardon of one of the doomed men with just two words: moriendum esse = 'You/he must die' (Suet. Aug. 15).

Ex Künker eLive Auction 72, 18 July 2022, 234.

The soldier on horseback carrying an enemy's head on the reverse of this issue refers to the heroic deeds of the moneyer's homonymous ancestor who, during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), reportedly continued fighting the Carthaginians despite the loss of an arm and a further twenty-three other wounds. Because the hero here is shown with a shield on one arm and a sword and a head in the other hand, we must assume the image depicts him before the loss of his arm!
