Lot description:

Cn. Nerius, 49 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.80 g, 1 h), with L. Lentulus and Claudius Marcellus, Rome. NERI•Q•VRB Head of Saturn to right, with harpa behind. Rev. [L•LENT] - C•MARC - CO-S Aquila between two signa inscribed H(astati) and P(rincipes). Babelon (Neria) 1. Crawford 441/1. RBW -. Sydenham 937. Beautifully toned. Struck somewhat off center and with a banker's mark on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

This coin appears to have been struck shortly after Caesar began his advance on Rome after crossing the River Rubicon. The names of both consuls appear on the reverse, an interesting occurrence considering it was their actions that provided Caesar the justification he needed to march on the city.
