L. Cossutius C.f. Sabula, 72 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.58 g, 3 h), Rome. SABVLA Head of Medusa to left, winged and with snakes crawling through her hair. Rev. L•COSSVTI•C•F / XXXV Bellerophon on Pegasus to right, brandishing spear with his right hand. Babelon Cossutia 1. Sydenham 790. RBW –. Crawford 395/1. Some marks and with a minor flan fault on the reverse, otherwise, about very fine.
Ex Leu Web Auction 18, 19-21 December 2021, 2442, from the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
