Lot description:

JUDAEA, Roman Administration. Titus, as Caesar, 69-79. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 15.00 g, 1 h), Caesarea Maritima (?), RY 3 = 70/1. [AYTOKP•TITOΣ]•KAIΣ•OYEΣΠ Laureate head of Titus to right, wearing aegis. Rev. ETOYΣ Γ IEPOY Eagle with spread wings standing left on palm frond, holding wreath in beak; in field to left, club. McAlee 379 ('Judaea Capta' issues). Prieur 140 (Tyre or Judaea Capta). RPC II 1967 (Caesarea Maritima). Sharply struck and amongst the finest known examples, a beautiful coin with an incredibly attractive portrait. Struck on the usual somewhat short flan and with minor doubling, otherwise, good extremely fine.

This magnificent portrait of the victorious conqueror of Jerusalem, Titus, was minted in the months immediately following the fall of the Jewish capital on 8 September 70 CE. As RPC suggests, the most likely mint is Caesaraea Maritima, the capital of the province, which served as the regional military headquarters during the Roman campaigns against the Jewish insurgents.
