BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kingdom. Menander I, circa 165/55-130 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 9.67 g, 1 h), Indian standard, uncertain mint in Paropamisadai or Gandhara. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ - MENANΔPOY Diademed heroic bust of Menander I to left, seen from behind, wearing aegis over shoulder and brandishing spear. Rev. 'Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa' ('of the Great King Menander the Savior' in Karoshti) Athena Promachos standing left, holding shield on left arm and brandishing thunderbolt with left right; to right, monogram. Bopearachchi 8B. HGC 12, 180. SNG ANS 747. A clear and attractive example with a splendid heroic portrait. A few minor marks and faint scratches, otherwise, good very fine.
