Lot description:

KINGS OF PARTHIA. Vardanes II, circa AD 55-58. Tetradrachm (Billon, 27 mm, 14.41 g, 12 h), Seleukeia on the Tigris, SE 367 = 55/6. Diademed and draped bust of Vologases I to left. Rev. [ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ] / ΒΑΣΙΛΕⲰ[Ν] - [ΑΡΣΑΚΟY] / ΕYΕΡΓΕ[ΤΟY] - ΔΙΚΑΙΟY - ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟ[YΣ] / [ΦΙΛΕ]ΛΛΗΝ[ΟΣ] Vologases I seated left, receiving wreath from Tyche standing right, holding scepter; in field above ZΞT (Z on its left side - misengraved); in exergue, [month]. Sellwood 69.7-9. Shore 372 (same dies). Cf. Sunrise 420 (for type). Extremely rare, apparently the second recorded example. Struck on a somewhat short flan as usual for this issue, and with som graffiti, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, ex Frank Robinson E-Auction 121, 31 May 2023, 84.

What makes this coin particularly interesting is that the date is misspelled ZΞT instead of TΞZ, a mistake only known from this die. Unfortunately, the month in exergue is missing on both surviving examples.

Starting price: 50 CHF
