LOWER DANUBE. Uncertain tribe. Circa 300-250 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 12.69 g, 2 h), imitating an issue of Philip II of Macedon from Amphipolis. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Young jockey, holding palm frond in his right hand and reins in his left, riding horse to right; below horse, Z; below horse's foreleg, dolphin right. Cf. Le Rider pl. 48, 4-5 (for prototype). Dembski -. Flesche -. Lanz -, cf. 354 (thunderbolt above Z). OTA 10/4 var. (no Z). A nicely toned piece of very attractive early Celtic style. Some faint scratches, otherwise, good very fine.
