Lot description: KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Antigonos I Monophthalmos – Seleukos I/Ptolemy I. Circa 320-280 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 17.11 g, 10h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint in southern Asia Minor. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; ΔE in left field, HP monogram below throne. Price 3068. Underlying luster. Good VF. Very rare, only four in Pella, one in CoinArchives. While it is fairly certain that this issue was struck in a mint in southern Asia Minor, the boundaries of the Antigonid, Seleukid, and Ptolemaic possessions there continually shifted during the period of its striking. Thus, although the Antigonids usually controlled most of this region during this time, this coin might instead be a product of a mint under Seleukid or Ptolemaic authority. Estimate: 300 USD |
