Lot description:

Levantine Region, uncertain mint AR Unit. "Middle Levantine" Series. Circa 4th century BC. Diademed male head to right, wearing round earring / Persian king standing to right, holding dagger and battling lion (or holding by the forelock), standing to left on its hind legs. M. Johananoff: From Sidon to Samaria: Fourth-Century BCE Autonomous Coins of Samaria with Sidonian Motifs, INR 16 (2021), p. 24, 3, pl. 1:14 (AR M'h of Palestinian or Philistian mint); for a similar obverse of Philistian style cf. Gitler & Tal VI.14Da. 0.60g, 7mm, 10h.

Very Fine. Exceedingly Rare; apparently the second known example after that in The Shick Collection published in Johananoff.

Acquired from Leu Numismatik AG.

While stylistically, the obverse portrays an oriental head resembling Philistian types, the reverse scene with a king or hero fighting a lion is typical of Samarian issues.

Estimate: 100 GBP
