| Lot description: SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Antioch. Galba. AD 68-69. Æ As (29mm, 14.24 g, 12h). G. Licinius Mucianus, legatus Syriae. Dated Caesarian Era 117 (AD 68/9). Laureate head right / EΠI MOYKIA NOY AN TIOXEΩ N ET IZ P (date), within laurel wreath composed of eight sets of leaves. McAlee 311; Butcher 147i; RPC I 4313. Brown and red patina, obverse roughness, smoothing. Near VF. Rare with the date written IZ instead of ZI. From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 37 (20 March 1996), lot 1119. Gaius Licinius Mucianus was a Roman general and governor in Syria. He met then general Vespasian in AD 66 and by 69 had agreed to ally behind Otho, then take up arms against Vitellius, who had recently deposed Otho. It was agreed that Vespasian would stay behind in the east to quell a local revolt in Berytus while Mucianus marched west, picking up former praetorians who had previously supported Otho and those opposed to Vitellius. Mucianus arrived in Rome the day after the death of Vitellius to find Vespasian's younger son, Domitian, sitting on the throne. The following day, Vespasian was declared emperor by the Senate. The year of the four emperors and the civil war had ended with Vespasian the victor, ushering in the beginning of the new Flavian era in Rome. Little is known of Mucianus' life from this point on; it is believed that he became one of the emperor's advisors and inner circle. He died in Rome before the end of Vespasian's reign.
